General Tips

On mobile devices, the background operation of the app may be blocked or limited, causing notifications and incoming calls to stop arriving. This guide will help restore their functionality if the app is being unloaded from memory and not working in the background.

General Recommendations for Android

  1. Make sure the app has permission to show notifications: Settings > Apps > select the app > Notifications > enable the permission.
Starting from Android 13, showing notifications is a separate permission (POST_NOTIFICATIONS), and for a newly installed app, notifications are disabled by default until the user grants permission.
  2. Exclude the app from standard power-saving features.
  3. Disable background data saving or add the app to the exceptions for background data transfer.
  4. Disable automatic suspension of unused apps: Settings > Apps > select the app > turn off Pause app activity if unused.
If this option is enabled, after several months of inactivity the system revokes the app's permissions, clears temporary files, and stops its background activity and notifications.
  5. Still not receiving notifications? Collect diagnostics and contact Support: Support will check which notification service is running on the device. Install the app from another store only if support advises it.
When installing from a store other than Google Play, background activity must be allowed not only for the app itself but also for the store: RuStore or AppGallery together with HMS Core. Without this, push notifications will arrive with a significant delay.
In the app from RuStore, notifications arrive only through the RuStore service. The manufacturer does not embed RuStore in Android, so the system restricts it in the background more strictly than Google services. For notifications to arrive reliably, complete all the steps of this guide for both the app and RuStore. Open the app at least once every two days: if you do not open it for longer, the system stops the app.
  6. Pin the app in the recent list to prevent it from being unloaded from memory.
  7. Exclude the app from third-party optimizations or disable optimizations entirely.
  8. Disable restrictions in manufacturer-provided optimizer apps or uninstall them.
  9. Make sure the app is not blocked by Do Not Disturb or Focus (Digital Wellbeing) modes, and add it to the exceptions for these modes.

Notes

  • The paths to settings may differ even among different models from the same manufacturer.
  • After an OS update or device reboot, exception settings are sometimes reset and may need to be restored manually.
  • If the device is enrolled in a mobile device management (MDM) system or the app is installed in an Android Enterprise work profile, some of the listed settings may be controlled by administrator policies and may not be available to the user. In this case, contact your administrator or your organization's support.

Android 13–16 Restrictions

Besides manufacturer optimizations, every new Android version adds its own app restrictions. They apply to devices from any vendor.

Restriction Description
Android 13: Notification Permission

Posting notifications became a separate permission. On Android 13 and higher, notifications are off by default for a newly installed app until the user grants the permission — on first launch or manually: Settings > Apps > select the app > Notifications.

The permission is not required for incoming call notifications and media sessions — they are still shown even if other notifications are blocked.
Android 15: Foreground Service Limits

The system allows data sync services to run for a total of 6 hours within a 24-hour period, after which it stops them. In addition, an app cannot start certain foreground services from the background or right after a device reboot.

A permanently running background service no longer guarantees message delivery. System push notifications must be the primary channel, so Google Play Services, HMS Core or RuStore have to work correctly on the device.
Android 16: Notification Cooldown

If an app posts several notifications in a row, the system automatically lowers the volume of the following ones. To disable: Settings > Notifications > turn off Use notification cooldown.

Android 16: Advanced Protection

Advanced Protection (Settings > Security & privacy > Advanced Protection) enables a whole set of strict restrictions at once: it blocks installation from unknown sources, limits accessibility service access and disables some network features.

With this mode on, installing the app from an APK file will be blocked, and apps that rely on accessibility services may misbehave. Use an app store instead, or temporarily turn the mode off.
