Managing Tags

Tag settings

To open the tag settings, select Settings (avatar above the chat list) > Tags (Tags settings) or click the gear icon in the tag list below the search field in the web/desktop app.

In the settings, you can create and delete your own tags, reorder tags, and disable unnecessary ones. There, you can also customize the tabs of the chat list that correspond to tags, and notifications for chat and contact tags.

Creating Tags and Tabs

Open the tag settings. To create a new tag, click the Create button. You can also create a new tag from the context menu of a chat, contact, or message: enter a name for a tag that doesn't exist yet. Then, in the web/desktop app, press the Enter key.

What Are the Naming Restrictions for Tags?

The tag name cannot contain spaces. The following words are reserved and cannot be used as names: open, mentioned, personal, channels, bots, important, unread, pinned, threads, popular, recent. You cannot create tags with names that match the standard system tab names in any of the app's interface languages.

How to Create a Tab?

To turn a chat tag into a separate tab above the chat list, open the tag settings. In the web/desktop app, drag the tag up past the horizontal divider line. In the mobile app, pin the tag.

Assigning tags

To add a tag to a chat, contact, or message, in its context menu, select Add tag and start typing the name of an existing or new tag. A new tag is created automatically. To assign the selected tag, press Enter in the web/desktop app, or tap the plus button on the tag creation screen in the mobile app.

To add a tag to a chat or contact, open the chat or contact card and select Add tag.
You can't add a tag to yourself: there is no Add tag item in the context menu of your own profile. Your role in the chat doesn't affect this: a chat administrator can't add a tag to themselves either. You can mention yourself in a message using a double @@, see How user and bot mentions work.

How to Add Multiple Tags?

If a chat, contact, or message already has a tag, you can add another one — click inside the field next to the current tag and enter the name of an additional tag.

Removing tags

To remove a tag from a chat, contact, or message, open its context menu and click the cross next to the tag. Chats and contacts also have this cross in their cards.
