KakaoTalk: What is known about the messenger?

KakaoTalk is a messenger from South Korea used by more than 95% of the country's population. Initially, it was created by Kakao Corp as a free alternative to SMS, but over time the project quickly grew into a global ecosystem. Kakao Corp itself was founded in 2006 (originally as IWILAB), but on September 1, 2010, it was renamed Kakao Corp after the launch of the KakaoTalk messenger. In Russia, the messenger became popular after March 2026, when it entered the top 11 App Store apps in the social networking category. Despite the recent surge in downloads and its appearance in app store rankings, KakaoTalk's stable daily audience in Russia remains niche. It is mainly used by fans of Korean culture (K-pop, Korean dramas) and IT specialists.

In December 2024, Roskomnadzor included the messenger in the register of organizers of information dissemination (ORI). This means that the service is required to store users' messages and files on servers inside the country and provide them to government agencies upon request. In May 2026, the company announced plans to officially register its trademark in Russia.

Key features and capabilities

Chats and channels

The messenger's basic functionality allows users to communicate in a standard one-on-one chat window, as well as use group chats with hundreds of participants. Its unique feature is — Open Chat — anonymous interest-based rooms where users can communicate without adding each other as friends, using temporary avatars and nicknames. This makes the platform popular among users who do not want to reveal their personal data.

For commerce, KakaoTalk offers channels with mailing capabilities, read analytics, and tools for accepting payments. Payments are processed through the built-in KakaoPay system, which supports payment by QR code, NFC, transfers between users, payment for goods and services, as well as balance top-ups. However, these functions are limited for Russian users. To open a business channel with monetization and connect payment acceptance, a registered address in South Korea and verification are required. Without this, only basic channels for reading notifications and coupons are available

File and multimedia sharing

File and media sharing is implemented conveniently, but it is worth considering that data is automatically deleted from KakaoTalk servers after an unspecified period of time. For some users, this may be inconvenient, while for others this feature becomes an advantage in terms of privacy and saving space on the device.

Calls and conferences

  • High-quality voice and video calls are available, including the FaceTalk feature.
  • Group calls are supported: video conferences are designed for small groups (up to 10 participants). This is enough for personal communication or small meetings, but may become a limitation for large-scale work calls.

Additional features

The built-in AI assistant deserves a separate mention: it helps translate messages in real time and structure long conversations.

Security

For Russian users, the key issue when using a foreign messenger is its availability and the risk of blocking. Popular platforms such as WhatsApp* and Telegram have already faced restrictions from government authorities. In this regard, it is important to monitor how stable KakaoTalk's operation in Russia is and how the service complies with legal requirements.

*Owned by Meta, which is recognized as an extremist organization and banned in the Russian Federation.

KakaoTalk provides a basic level of protection through traffic encryption (client-to-server) and end-to-end encryption in «Secret Chats» (End-to-End). At the same time, the platform is a South Korean product, and its servers are physically located outside the Russian Federation. In this regard, using the messenger for corporate tasks with high information security requirements or personal data processing may be limited. For such scenarios, it is usually recommended to choose domestic software solutions that comply with Russian regulatory requirements

Personalization

The messenger supports interface customization: users can set their own themes, fonts, and backgrounds. Animated stickers are available in the messenger, with the most famous characters being Kakao Friends - Ryan the lion and Apeach the peach. These characters are used not only in conversations but are also released as merchandise (goods that can be purchased) and presented in physical stores.

Pros and cons of KakaoTalk

Pros:

  • Stable operation in Russia: at the moment, the service is not blocked, accepts Russian phone numbers, and works.
  • Open Chats: the feature allows users to join interest-based communities without revealing their phone number or adding interlocutors to their personal contact list
  • Anonymous Open Chats: a unique tool for quick networking and discussing niche topics without exposing a personal profile.
  • Customization: the ability to adjust the messenger's appearance to your preferences.

Cons:

  • Disappearing files and photos: the inability to return to chat history and download documents sent a month ago.
  • AI assistant: the built-in AI message translator currently does not support Russian (only Korean, English, and several other languages are available).
  • Difficult account recovery: if access to the linked phone number is lost, restoring the profile is extremely difficult. If the account is deleted manually, all chat history and purchased stickers are permanently erased
  • Verification failures: when registering with some foreign (including Russian) numbers, delays may occur in receiving SMS confirmation codes
  • Overloaded interface: the app is built as a "super app" and includes built-in taxi, delivery, payment, and gaming services. This increases its size and load on the device.

What to do if the cons are critical for you

KakaoTalk is well suited for consuming entertainment content, communicating in thematic communities, or studying Korean culture. However, for everyday and reliable communication in Russia, it has objective limitations: the lack of native Russian language support in built-in functions (for example, in the AI translator), dependence on foreign servers, and the potential risk of access restrictions make it not the most convenient choice for basic communications. Loss of chat history or sudden service disruptions can cause serious inconvenience.

That is why many users are increasingly choosing domestic messengers as their main platform for daily communication. Such solutions offer seamless work with the Russian language (including high-quality voice input and smart search), guaranteed stability without the risk of external blocking, as well as familiar and convenient tools for organizing both personal and business chats.

eXpress — a Russian alternative to KakaoTalk

As a functional alternative for those who value stability and full Russian language support, domestic developments such as eXpress are often considered — a Russian messenger with calls, chats, and channels, created in Russian and offering full functionality without restrictions. The platform combines features familiar to many users: personal and group chats, threads, high-quality voice messages, file sharing, statuses, emojis, and stickers. In the free version, the messenger covers all basic needs in daily communication.

eXpress has a clear advantage for corporate use. The platform is certified by FSTEC and fully complies with the requirements of Russian legislation. The ability to deploy it on the company's own servers (On-Premise), guaranteed data storage in the Russian Federation, and seamless integration with business systems (for example, 1C or corporate email) make it a reliable choice for companies with high information security requirements.
