In 2026, messengers have become the main communication tool, replacing phone calls, SMS, and partially social networks. In this article we will explain how messengers have evolved and which messaging apps are the most popular today in Russia and around the world.

History of messenger development

Messengers began replacing traditional communication methods in the mid-2000s, but the real breakthrough occurred in the 2010s. Since the launch of ICQ in 1996, internet pagers gradually evolved, but the mass adoption of messengers only became possible with the growing availability of smartphones and mobile internet.

The key turning point — the emergence of WhatsApp* (2009) and Telegram (2013). These applications offered a free, fast, and convenient alternative to SMS and voice calls, especially in the context of expensive or limited mobile tariffs.

By the mid-2010s, messengers had already surpassed social networks in frequency of use for personal communication. By the 2020s, they became the main channel not only for messaging but also for business communications, replacing email, phone calls, and even some functions of social networks.

Main reasons for popularity:

  • Free communication with internet access;
  • Simple interface;
  • Support for video calls and file transfer;
  • Ability to create groups and channels;
  • Integration of AI assistants and bots.

Thus, messengers became the leading platform for online communication by the end of the 2010s and continue to maintain this position in 2026.

Top-5 most popular messengers in Russia

In 2025, Russian users actively use both foreign and domestic messengers. However, amid stricter requirements of Federal Law No. 152-FZ “On Personal Data” — in particular, the mandatory storage of Russian users’ data only on Russian servers and the ban on transferring personal information through foreign messengers — increasing attention is being paid to local solutions.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp* remains the leader among messengers in Russia: according to Mediascope, in April 2026 its monthly audience exceeded 97 million people over the age of 12.

whatsapp

The popularity is explained by a simple interface, reliable message delivery, and basic features demanded by mass users: text messages, voice and video calls, file exchange up to 2 GB, creation of groups with up to 1024 participants, and statuses similar to stories. It is important that WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption by default for all personal messages and calls.

However, the service belongs to Meta Platforms, which in 2022 was recognized as an extremist organization and banned in the Russian Federation. Despite this, WhatsApp* continues to operate, but its blocking remains possible at any time within the framework of legislation. This creates legal and operational risks for users and businesses. In addition, users periodically face difficulties when making calls in certain regions, although a large-scale blocking of the service has not yet been introduced.

Telegram

Telegram ranks second in Russia with a monthly audience of about 89 million users according to data from April 2025.

Telegram

The popularity of Telegram is explained by its speed, flexibility, and extended functionality: channels for mass distribution, public and private chats, bots, cloud storage, message editing, and support for files up to 2 GB. Unlike WhatsApp, end-to-end encryption in Telegram is not enabled by default but only in “secret chats,” which do not support group conversations.

Telegram is developed by Russian programmers Pavel and Nikolai Durov, but it is registered outside Russia and does not comply with Russian legislation regarding data disclosure. This provides users with a high level of autonomy but also carries risks: the platform may be blocked if regulatory requirements become stricter, especially due to disagreements with FSB requirements regarding data decryption. Nevertheless, in 2026 Telegram remains available and is actively used both for personal and professional communication.

VK Messenger

VK Messenger is popular in Russia due to its deep integration with the social network “VKontakte” — one of the largest digital services in the country. According to 2025 data, about 55.8 million people use the messenger monthly.

VK Messenger

The VK Messenger functionality includes text messages, voice and video calls (including group calls), sending files up to 2 GB, creating conversations with mentions and polls, cloud synchronization of chats, and push notifications. The messenger is available both as a separate application and as a built-in module within the VKontakte feed.

The platform belongs to VK, a company registered in Russia, and fully complies with local legislation, including data storage requirements. This makes the service stable and predictable under tightening internet regulation. Blocking VK Messenger is unlikely since the company cooperates with regulators and provides access to metadata when there are legal grounds.

Yandex Messenger

Yandex Messenger is part of the Yandex ecosystem and closely interacts with the “Mail” application and other company services. As of 2025, its monthly audience in Russia is about 10–12 million users.

Яндекс Мессенджер

Its popularity is driven by convenient integration with Yandex.Mail, automatic contact synchronization, and the ability to communicate without separate registration — a Yandex account is sufficient.

Main functions: text messages, voice calls, file sending, creation of groups and notifications. A special feature is intelligent filtering of spam and malicious links, as well as integration with Yandex.Disk and smart assistants (for example, the smart speaker Alice).

The messenger is developed by a Russian company and complies with Russian legislation, including requirements for data storage and cooperation with regulators. This makes it an unlikely candidate for blocking. However, due to its smaller reach compared with WhatsApp, Telegram, and VK, it remains a situational solution mainly used by active users of the Yandex ecosystem.

MAX

Messenger MAX — a new Russian service developed by the VK holding. Its beta version became available in spring 2025, and the official launch took place in autumn. As of February 2026, the number of registered accounts in MAX exceeded 45 million, which is almost one third of the population of Russia.

Мессенджер MAX

According to other data, there are about 18 million active users, mainly from large cities: Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Samara, Krasnodar, and Yekaterinburg. The functionality includes: personal and group chats, exchange of media files and documents (up to 4 GB), voice and video calls, emojis, stickers and interactive elements, channels and groups.

At early stages the messenger worked in test mode with limited functionality — without support for mini-applications and advanced integrations.

Since MAX was announced as the idea of a nationwide messenger, it fully complies with legislation regarding data storage requirements. There is no talk about the risk of its blocking. The messenger aims to become a domestic alternative to WhatsApp* and Telegram amid growing attention to digital sovereignty.

Popular messenger for business

Amid growing demand for secure and legally compliant communication platforms, worthy alternatives to foreign services have begun appearing on the market. The Russian company Unlimited Production, which owns the corporate platform eXpress, announced the availability of its service for public users on a free basis.

eXpress мессенджер

The service is positioned as a domestic alternative to foreign platforms — primarily Telegram and WhatsApp*.

The eXpress messenger provides end-to-end encryption for all personal chats and calls, does not collect metadata, and does not transfer information to third parties. All servers are located in Russia, which guarantees compliance with the requirements of Federal Law 152-FZ and eliminates risks of blocking by regulators.

In addition to a high level of protection, users note the intuitive interface. The platform combines all modern features necessary both for work and personal communication. For example, group chats, channels, file exchange, voice and video calls. Companies can integrate the system with corporate services, automate their unique processes, and implement their own corporate style in the messenger interface.

Top-5 most popular messengers in the world

Having reviewed the most popular messengers in Russia, let’s see which services lead worldwide.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp* — the most popular messenger in the world. According to 2025 data, more than 3.1 billion people use it monthly, which is about 47% of the global messenger market. The service is available in more than 180 countries and supports more than 60 languages.

In Russia WhatsApp also leads: the audience reaches up to 97 million active users per month aged over 12. This makes it the main channel of personal and business communication in the country.

Key WhatsApp* features:

  • Text messages and statuses (similar to stories);
  • Voice and video calls (including group calls up to 32 participants);
  • File sharing up to 2 GB;
  • Group chats — up to 1024 participants;
  • End-to-end encryption enabled by default for all chats and calls;
  • Multi-platform support (iOS, Android, Windows, macOS);
  • Web version and desktop application with synchronization.

WhatsApp belongs to Meta Platforms, which is recognized as an extremist organization in the Russian Federation. Despite this, the messenger still operates without restrictions, although the risk of blocking remains.

Thanks to its simplicity, reliability, and wide distribution, WhatsApp* remains the choice of the majority of users both worldwide and in Russia.

Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger — a messenger from Meta Platforms, closely integrated with the Facebook social network. As of 2025, about 931 million people worldwide use it monthly, making it one of the largest messengers but significantly behind WhatsApp in reach.

Main features include text messages, group chats, voice and video calls, sending files, stickers and effects, as well as integration with games and Marketplace.

End-to-end encryption is not enabled by default — it is available only in the “Secret chats” mode, which does not support group conversations.

In Russia Facebook Messenger is unavailable. Since March 2022 access to Facebook and Messenger has been completely blocked in the Russian Federation because the parent company Meta Platforms is recognized as an extremist organization. Attempts to bypass the block (via VPN or mirrors) do not guarantee stable operation and may violate legislation.

Thus, despite high popularity abroad, Facebook Messenger is not widely used in Russia and is not part of the local messenger landscape.

WeChat

WeChat — a Chinese messenger developed by Tencent. As of 2025 it has about 1.3 billion monthly active users, mainly in China.

The functionality of WeChat goes far beyond messaging:

  • Text chats, voice and video calls;
  • Groups up to 500 participants;
  • Built-in payments (WeChat Pay);
  • Mini-programs (similar to lightweight applications inside the messenger);
  • Integration with booking services, delivery, government services and social networks.

End-to-end encryption is not used in WeChat. Tencent provides Chinese authorities access to messages according to local legislation.

In Russia WeChat is not popular: the audience is limited to representatives of Chinese business, tourists and students. The application is not blocked but is rarely used due to the language barrier, lack of local support and dependence on the Chinese ecosystem.

Telegram

Telegram — one of the most popular messengers in the world. As of 2025 about 950 million people use it monthly globally.

In Russia Telegram ranks second in popularity after WhatsApp: the audience reaches about 89 million active users per month.

Key Telegram features:

  • Cloud chats with synchronization across all devices;
  • Groups up to 200,000 participants and channels with unlimited audience;
  • File sharing up to 2 GB;
  • Bots and mini-applications;
  • Voice and video calls;
  • “Secret chats” with end-to-end encryption.

Important: end-to-end encryption is enabled only in “secret chats,” while regular dialogs remain cloud-based.

Telegram is registered outside Russia and does not provide data to Russian authorities. In 2018–2020 the service was partially blocked in Russia, but since 2020 it has been available without restrictions. In 2026 Telegram is actively used for both personal and professional purposes.

Discord

A messenger originally created for gamers but by 2026 it became a popular platform for communication in communities, educational groups, and remote teams. Global monthly audience — about 240 million people.

Main Discord features:

  • Text channels and private messages;
  • Voice and video chats with low latency;
  • Creation of independent “servers” with flexible moderation;
  • Integration with games, streaming and third-party services;
  • Support for bots and custom roles.

The service does not use end-to-end encryption, and data is stored in the United States.

In Russia Discord has been blocked since October 2024. Access is restricted due to non-compliance with Russian legislation and its status as a foreign IT service. In 2026 Discord remains unavailable without technical workarounds.

Conclusion

By 2026 messengers have finally established themselves as the main tool of digital communication — both in personal and professional environments. In Russia WhatsApp* and Telegram dominate, combining convenience, functionality and mass accessibility.

At the same time demand for domestic solutions is growing — such as VK Messenger, Yandex Messenger, MAX and eXpress — which comply with national legislation and minimize risks of blocking.

Globally WhatsApp leads, while Telegram remains a key player in CIS countries and Eastern Europe. Facebook Messenger and Discord, although popular abroad, are blocked or used in a limited way in Russia.

Choosing a messenger today is a balance between convenience, privacy, legal security and technological independence. More and more users and companies choose platforms that provide data protection and stable operation in the local market.
