WhatsApp is among the three most popular messengers in Russia along with Telegram and Viber. Thanks to its simple and user-friendly interface, WhatsApp is used by people of different ages. In addition to personal chats, the messenger allows users to make calls and communicate in group chats. Some companies use it as a business tool, for example to conduct correspondence and receive orders from clients.

However, in 2025 many people started looking for a WhatsApp alternative. Why this happened and what alternatives are available today is explained in this article.

What happened to WhatsApp in Russia

WhatsApp belongs to the American company Meta* (recognized in the Russian Federation as an extremist organization and banned) and is included by Roskomnadzor in the blacklist of messengers through which it is prohibited to transmit payment documents, personal data of Russian citizens, as well as information about their accounts and deposits, data on money transfers and other information required for payments. In the Roskomnadzor register, along with WhatsApp, there are messengers such as Viber, Skype and Telegram, which store user data abroad and are controlled by foreign companies.

Currently, a draft law is under consideration according to which the transfer of legally significant data via foreign messengers will be subject to fines. For officials, the fine will range from 30,000 to 50,000 rubles, and for legal entities from 100,000 to 700,000 rubles. However, it is important to emphasize that these fines will apply only to financial organizations and government institutions. Ordinary citizens who use the messenger for personal purposes will not be fined for now.

Naturally, such legislative changes have prompted many people to look for a Russian alternative to WhatsApp that would have similar functionality but at the same time comply with Russian legislation and be more secure in terms of personal data.

Many began looking for a replacement for the familiar messenger for several reasons, including insufficient functionality, spam calls and spam messages. But one of the key reasons, despite end-to-end encryption, is information security: unlawful use of data, leaks and third-party interference. It is enough to recall the Pegasus spyware attack or the leak of a database with the numbers of 500 million users put up for sale by hackers. In addition, the messenger has repeatedly been criticized for its role in the spread of fake news and disinformation.

How to replace WhatsApp in Russia: a list of solutions

Let’s review 9 WhatsApp alternatives for personal communication and for business. They are as follows:

  • eXpress
  • Yandex Messenger
  • TamTam
  • VK Messenger
  • MAX
  • Compass
  • Pachka
  • BiP
  • Session

eXpress

The eXpress messenger, developed by the Russian company Unlimited Production, is a communication platform that offers users a wide range of features (instant messaging and file sharing, audio and video calls, chats, channels, address book, tags, threads, and more). eXpress can be used both for personal and corporate communication (see the differences between the capabilities of public and corporate versions). The platform offers multilayer data encryption that guarantees all conversations remain secure and confidential, three-factor authentication, and “secret” chats. Corporate users also have the option of deployment on company servers (on-premise).

The messenger is a domestic alternative to WhatsApp and will be an excellent option for those who need an affordable and secure messenger for video calls with family, friends and colleagues.

Yandex Messenger

Yandex Messenger is a popular instant messaging application developed by the Russian technology giant Yandex. It allows users to send text messages, make voice and video calls, share photos and files, and create and subscribe to channels.

Яндекс.Мессенджер

The application has a convenient and simple interface that is easy to navigate. There is functionality for companies: workspaces for employee communication, an address book, and chatbots. Correspondence is stored in encrypted form on Yandex servers.

TamTam

TamTam is a messaging application developed by the Russian internet company Mail.Ru Group based on the OK Messages application. TamTam offers private and group chats, channels, voice and video calls, file and sticker sharing.

мессенджер TamTam

A distinctive feature of the application is its stable operation with a weak internet connection and the ability to send messages offline (in this case, messages are sent automatically once connected to the internet). In TamTam, users can log in using accounts from Odnoklassniki and VKontakte.

VK Messenger

The VK Messenger application was first launched in 2016 as the official messenger of the VKontakte social network. Thanks to its simple interface, VK Messenger is a popular application for messaging, voice and video calls, and media sharing. In addition, companies can use the platform to communicate with clients.

VK Messenger

VK Messenger, which is considered the most popular among Russian schoolchildren, offers the Sferum educational profile for students, teachers and parents. Homework assignments and messages about parent-teacher meetings can now be received in a Russian messenger. Users of the Sferum educational profile in VK Messenger also have access to the option of transferring contacts from WhatsApp chats.

MAX

MAX is a national messenger developed by the VK holding with government support and officially launched in March 2025. Its distinctive feature is its status as a mandatory pre-installation on all new smartphones and tablets sold in Russia starting from September 1, 2025. As of January 2026, the messenger has 85 million users, more than 55 million of whom use it daily.

Мессенджер MAX

The developers position MAX as a next-generation multifunctional platform, a “Russian WeChat”, aiming to combine personal communication, business services and government services in a single application.

In addition to basic messenger capabilities, the platform offers integration with the Gosuslugi ecosystem. For businesses, there are tools for creating chatbots and mini-applications that function as online stores or booking systems.

Compass

Compass is a corporate messenger focused on businesses ranging from small teams to large enterprises. It is available both as a cloud-based solution and for local installation (on-premise), where the messenger server is physically located within the company’s infrastructure, providing full control over data.

функции мессенджера compass

The functionality of Compass covers the core needs of companies for corporate communication: private and group chats with discussion threads, advanced search through history and documents, employee profiles, and activity statistics. A key feature is built-in high-quality video conferencing that supports more than 1000 participants simultaneously with cameras enabled. To ensure stable connections even with slow internet, an adaptive algorithm dynamically adjusts video quality.

For secure communication, end-to-end data transmission encryption (TLS 1.3, SRTP), three-factor authentication, and integration with corporate security systems (DLP and SIEM) are available. Compass is suitable for companies looking for a secure solution for internal communication and large-scale online meetings.

Pachka

Pachka is a corporate messenger developed by the Russian company Primavera and aimed at structuring work communication. The product philosophy is to help teams separate work and personal chats, minimize information noise, and focus on tasks. In the interface, users can flexibly group chats into folders, separate personal dialogs, and organize spaces for projects or departments.

российский мессенджер Пачка

To structure discussions in chats, threaded conversations are used to help preserve context in active group discussions. The platform supports audio and video calls for up to 100 participants with screen sharing and recording. Pachka also provides automation and integration tools: an open API, ready-made mechanisms for data transfer between applications (webhooks) for popular services (for example, GitLab and Google Calendar), and the ability to create chatbots. This allows company business processes to be embedded directly into the messenger.

A distinctive feature of Pachka is its hybrid local deployment model (BYOK), where message encryption keys are stored on the client side for additional data control. The messenger is suitable for agile teams, IT companies, and organizations of various sizes.

BiP

BiP is a multifunctional communication platform developed and supported by the largest Turkish telecom operator Turkcell. The messenger is used by tens of millions of users, primarily in Turkey, Europe and the Middle East. The platform offers text messaging, HD-quality voice and video calls (including group video conferences), chat and channel creation, and file sharing without loss of original quality.

BiP мессенджер

BiP stands out from competitors due to its set of built-in services. A distinctive feature is its emergency alert function: users can predefine trusted contacts and, in a critical situation, send them their exact location and status (“Safe” or “Help needed”) with a single tap. BiP also includes a built-in real-time translator for more than 100 languages in chats and the ability to make direct money transfers between users.

From a security perspective, developers claim the use of end-to-end encryption for messaging and calls. However, it is important to note that BiP is a closed-source product, making it impossible to conduct a full cybersecurity audit and verify these claims. The application collects extensive metadata and is tightly bound to a phone number.

In summary, BiP is a messenger with functionality similar to WhatsApp: messaging, voice and video calls, group chats, and stickers. The application is available in Russian and operates in the Russian Federation. It is included in this list as an example of a regional communication platform reflecting the global trend toward local digital solutions. It can be considered as a primary alternative for Russian users, but it is not suitable for business use.

Session

Session is a messenger created by the non-profit organization OPTF (The Oxen Privacy Tech Foundation) with a focus on privacy and anonymity. Its distinguishing feature is the complete absence of the need for personal data during registration. Instead of a phone number or email, a random unique identifier is generated when creating an account.

мессенджер session

Technically, Session is a decentralized messenger operating on a network of anonymous servers (nodes) supported by the community. To protect metadata and users’ IP addresses, advanced onion routing is used. Messages are protected by end-to-end encryption by default. The application is distributed as open source software.

Due to its decentralized architecture, developers physically have no access to user data and regularly publish reports stating that they do not comply with law enforcement requests for information. The functionality includes text and file sharing (up to 10 MB), group chats, and disappearing messages.

Session is a specialized tool for users for whom communication confidentiality is an absolute priority, even at the expense of convenience and speed offered by centralized platforms. The messenger is available to Russian users.

The blocking of calls in WhatsApp and unstable connections create risks for businesses, prompting users to abandon the familiar messenger. Unlike WhatsApp, many of the listed solutions are included in the register of domestic software, which eliminates the risk of being blocked within Russia. Such platforms pay special attention to corporate requirements in terms of security, integration with internal services, scalability and collaboration.
